Town Employee On Leave After Taking Photos Of Dead Westchester Woman In Suitcase

Just hours after the identity of the Westchester woman found bound and stuffed in a suitcase was released, Town of Greenwich officials are confirming that an employee is on paid administrative leave for taking photos of the murder victim and the crime scene and sharing them.

Valerie Reyes, 24, of New Rochelle, was found by town highway employees around 8:23 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, on the east shoulder of Glenville Road, justs north of Stillman Lane. 

“The victim was a daughter, a sister and a cousin of a family suffering a tremendous loss at this time," Greenwich First Selectman Peter J. Tesei said in a statement. "This thoughtless and insensitive behavior by an employee is inexcusable. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ms. Reyes’ family.”

The town said they it take the appropriate actions with the unidentified employee upon the conclusion of an investigation into the matter.

Greenwich police officials said they were aware of the actions by the town employee, but were, of course, not releasing the photo. 

Her cause of death has not been confirmed by the medical examiner, police said.

Reyes, a 2012 graduate of New Rochelle High School, had been reported missing by family on Jan. 30, she had been missing since Jan. 29.

The young woman worked at the Barnes & Noble in Eastchester located in the Vernon Hills Shopping Center.

The company said she had worked at the store since it opened and that employees were grieving her loss: “The entire Barnes & Noble community is grieving the loss of our beloved employee Valerie Reyes," the company said. "She worked in our Barnes & Noble Eastchester store since it opened two-and-a-half years ago. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time.”
